trapnstud It is very dificult to give advice from a distance. I realize it must be extremely frustrating for you to find the bait gone all the time. Other than being sure it is covered and is staked down some way I don't know what to tell you. Maybe there is too much overhead room. ? What do you think about pulling that set and making another in the same area? Go to www.traps4kids.com/ and go to the archives and look up sets for coon. You should find instructions to make a bank set there that will help you. The main thing is Don't give up!!!! You CAN figure it out just take your time and THINK ! Wish you the best of luck.

Just some suggestions without actually seeing the set-up or knowing conditions.
1. Is bait exposed or covered? Cover it.
2. You don't need walls to guide the coon. A few sticks stuck on an angle or upright in the mud will do. Reverse the angle. Tighten up the front so he has to go over the trap.
3. From looking at your drawing I would offset the trap a little and GENTLY guide foot placement with a stick in the mud or rock or whatever.
4. Make sure the bait is back far enough that he doesn't just reach in and grab it. Better yet fasten it down if you can. The idea is to make him work for ir a bit. Keep him there and odds are he will eventually step in the trap.
Try an think like him. "NOW WHERE WOULD HE PUT HIS FEET IF I DID THIS OR THAT?" Pursuade him to do just that.
GOOD LUCK !

Meant PULL OUT. I don't know the holding power of that trap.
That should be plenty swivels.
Good luck!

I personally don't use a trap that small for 'yotes and have no experience with the BMI 1 1/2 but with a short chain like that I would be sure to be cross staked as I mentioned above. I have never had a 'yote pump a cross staked stake yet. As for the 1 1/2 with a longer chain I tend to think they could pull, but again that is only my opinion. Another thing is I would have at least three swivels. Hope that is of some help.

paintmanj98 with 3 feet of chain you want a shock spring on there to prevent that from happening. I also want to be cross staked.

Galen,
With you all the way on this.
In early season while there are still a lot of pups I usually will put in a dirt hole set with a post set about 8 - 10 feet out from that.
If I feel real good about the location and my pre-season scouting says so, I will put in a flat set a short ways from that. Sorta in a triangle pattern.
Made a few triples that way over the years.

Galen,
#2 for me would be: Whats he gonna do now that he is here.
This would help me determine what type of set to put in.

Hey Birddog don't take it so personal man! I am sure no one feels that way about you.
I know in my case I have a difficult time sometimes trying to keep up with responding to all who post here. For one thing I am in no way affiliated with Galen or this site. I just came on here last fall and decided to try and get it active again. It had I believe 60 some members at the time. We now have over 100. Galen in NO WAY helps, supports, empowers or even acknowledges my doing this. WE DON'T WANT YOU TO STOP POSTING!!!
Now to answer your question go to it and I will respond the best I can at this time.

John
Good to hear from you on here. We don't have a lot of action here and appreciate all the input we can get esp from someone with your experience.
If any of you folks new to trapping have any questions please make a post. John will give some darn good advice on it.
John as you well know that 200 yotes a year is a heck of a lot of work. I don't think most folks realize what all is involved.
And from what I can tell you are one heck of a marten trapper. Sure would like to learn about that 'cause I never had the chance.
Start a post and tell us more about it if you feel like.

It means TO THE TOP it's to keep a post on top and active so it doesn't get lost.
I think we all appreciate Galen's reply and a lot of us can relate to what he said.
