When looking for areas to trap coyote and fox, watch your location. When your looking at a site to set ask yourself this Question? WHY WOULD OR WOULDNT THAT ANIMAL COME HERE. WHO WILL OFFER #2 TIP? ??

An animal would like a secretive, sheltered, 'safe' place...not a heavily traveled area-unless of course, we are talking suburbia...where they take what they can get...an animal would rather have a food supply fairly close to den site...again, if we are talking suburbia, shouldn't be too hard-esp. now, w/ teaching young and what not...I know I'm missing something...I'll think about it later...animals need escape routes also... I'm tired-goodnight! Jen

Galen,
#2 for me would be: Whats he gonna do now that he is here.
This would help me determine what type of set to put in.

looking that area over you are right to decide on what he will do. I think I try to make them do what I need them to do at this point. They are comfortable with the area that they move though. I use adirt hole set with lure and bait If im not real convideint with that I also set in a flat set. or I might use a second drit hole for a double. Early season canine trapping youll find that kits run together or with a parent, so setting up for a double catch is the best thing to do.

Galen,
With you all the way on this.
In early season while there are still a lot of pups I usually will put in a dirt hole set with a post set about 8 - 10 feet out from that.
If I feel real good about the location and my pre-season scouting says so, I will put in a flat set a short ways from that. Sorta in a triangle pattern.
Made a few triples that way over the years.

DOUBLES After thsat last question I thought about doubles. canines are sometimes loners so we tend to think a trap here and one there. Not true as pups tend to run in groups or with adults and when one stops to investigate or gets caught the others stay and look around or dont care to leave, which can mean a second catch if you have the trap out there. Dont for get about coon being the same way. the groups still are together and it is often possible to catch 3 to 5 coon in the rivers or creeks one right after the other. Gas today costs us more. Make good choices on sets this year. To make more money in less area.. so yo might think DOUBLES!!! see ya on the line

I am new to trapping too, last year was my second year. I have watched and watched my buddies camcorder tape of a coyote sitting on his rump lifting up real fast on his hindlegs then tugging hard straight up on the trap stakes. You more experienced folks how does this sound, from the trap to a double swivel to a window weight of 5 pounds, I have several with holes in both ends then to a long chain with another inline swivel to the stakes. To my thinking the weight would slow him down on the sideways rushes and put all the stress on the stakes sidways, no stress in the up direction......Hows that sound, I never tried it, just reciently thought of it after watching those tapes several dozen times.....jk

Jk If your using 4 or 5 feet of chain you don't have to worry about a yote pumping the stake. Also a yote won't pull the stake on side wise pulls either. The problem is if you don't have a good pad hold It could pull out when the animal hits the end of the chain with a full head of steam. Now your Idea Is fine on the window weight but It's to much stuff at the set and you will have to carry It all In and then will have bury It at the set. In line shock springs will help cure this problem.

Bird Dog Please explain where you are trapping. Rivers marshes? In rivers you should try and find the dens and under water channels and mark them before you have Ice. You can also find these spots if you have clear ice and clear water conditions. If you have clear ice you will also notice air bubbles that are trapped under the ice these indicate where the rats are swimming. And will lead to the rats den. But clear ice Is a very rare situation.

Mr. Beav thaks for both replys, my thought of the 5 pound weight is to slow him down so he does not get a "full head of steam", I understand what you mean. I don't get around to well so I drive as close as I can to wear ever I am setting or planning to set and I don't see anyreason that the stake has to be under the trap, put it 3 feet away. I can see carrying it in would be a problem but I plan on getting ready early this year, I say that about all my sports but never seem to be 100% ready until things are under way. Oh well thnks jk
